Effective target management:
The establishment of OKRs at company level

In today’s fast-paced business world, it is essential that companies continuously develop and set and achieve goals at all levels of the organization. One method that has proven to be extremely effective in achieving this in recent years is Objectives and Key Results (OKRs).

Implementation concept vs. implementation management

OKRs increase transparency, motivate your teams and ensure progress. In this video you will learn everything you need to know about:

  • Implementation concept
  • Implementation management
  • Operational Excellence
  • Target image story
  • Target picture puzzle
  • Meta-OKR
Writing a target image story

ProgressMaker® distinguishes between two phases:

  • Implementation concept (= operational excellence): the daily activities along the value chain, e.g. building automotive parts (working in the system)
  • Strategic further development of the company, e.g. advancing digitalization (working on the system)

OKRs are suitable for both process levels. The cycle consists of the implementation concept and implementation management.

The first step in the implementation concept is to write a target image story. A vision story has the function of describing a target state. The story vividly answers the question:
What will be different in year X?
This allows your teams to visualize the state that will be achieved once the strategy has been successfully implemented. The story should be formulated as concretely as possible. Write a story for every goal!

In the second step, the target image story is translated into a target image puzzle. In this way, the target image story is systematized and broken down into individual target states. The target image puzzle is therefore a meta-OCR. Each piece of the puzzle illustrates an individual target image aspect and thus an individual target state.

A target image story becomes a target image puzzle

A target image puzzle consists of an impact (= motive) and an outcome (= added value). It contains no input and no output. The HOW therefore plays no role. A sequence is also not defined in the target picture puzzle. Your employees can therefore recognize the target state in a compact way. The target picture puzzle is followed by the third step: setting the priorities for the implementation sprints.

This concludes the implementation concept and implementation management begins. You will now advance your key results month by month. In this way, you will successively achieve the target states described in your target picture puzzle. Every month, your teams will see tangible progress. The target picture story remains valid at the start of a new sprint, but is reviewed every 6 months.

Have fun with the video!
